About Us

Sumner County Historical Society

The Sumner County Historical Society’s organization was prompted in 1975 by the forth coming Bicentennial of our nation’s birth the following year.
It was felt that an umbrella society for the county was needed as a clearing house to handle all the upcoming state wide requests and events.
The organizational meeting was held at the Edward Ward Carmack Library in Gallatin, Tennessee. Walter Thomas Durham was elected president, Janan Flynn Dorris as vice president, Danny Tomlin as secretary and Glenn Hackett as treasurer.
The first annual dinner meeting was held February 12, 1976 at the Gallatin Senior High School.
On July 12, 1986 the society was incorporated for the purpose of collecting and preserving documents, data and other items of historical interest; to disseminate information of historical interest and to promote the study of history in schools and colleges throughout Sumner County.
